IELTS Academic Test Format

The IELTS Academic Exam is a proficiency test for undergraduate and postgraduate programs that evaluate your English Language skills at an academic level.

The test has four sections:

1. Listening Test

  • The listening test has 4 sections.
  • Audio will be played, and you have to listen to the conversation and answer the questions.
  • There will be 40 questions, and you have 30 minutes to answer them.
  • Candidates will be asked to answer multiple-choice question diagrams, match the information and fill in the blanks.

2. Reading Test

  • The Reading test is 60 minutes long.
  • There will be three long reading passages containing texts from books, newspapers, and magazines.
  • Candidates have to answer 40 questions based on the information given in the text.
  • IELTS Academic Reading involves more complex reading and difficult vocabulary than IELTS General Reading.

3. Writing Test

The Academic Writing test is divided into two tasks:

Task 1: you will be given a table, chart, graph, or diagram, and you have to describe or summarise the information given in the graphs or diagrams.

Task 2: candidates need to write an essay responding to the argument or problem. Candidates will have 60 minutes to complete both tasks.

You will be asked to justify your point of view on a topic, explain the pros and cons of a topic, discuss the cause of an effect and provide a solution for it. You should write an essay of about 250 to 280 words.

4. Speaking Test

The IELTS Academic Speaking Test is the same as the IELTS General. The Speaking test is more like an 11-15 minutes interview.

The speaking test is divided into three parts:

Task 1: is a short introduction about yourself and general questions on familiar subjects such as work, hobbies, family, etc.

Task 2: candidates have to speak on a given topic for one minute. You will have one minute to draft your answer using pencil and paper.

Task 3: has follow-up questions, the examiner will ask you specific questions, and you have to express your views.

Practice For IELTS Academic

1. IELTS Writing

  • Task 1: Summarise your response in three parts: introduction, explanation of main features from the graph, and overview.
  • Task 2: the Writing Test carries more marks than Task 1. Hence, spend more time writing Task 2.
  • Task achievement, that is, writing answers to the point, is essential.
  • Manage your time to check your answer at the end.

2. IELTS Speaking

  • IELTS speaking will assess your English-speaking skills. It will be a face-to-face examination.
  • Be well-prepared and answer questions with confidence.
  • Practice mock tests at home with your friends and ask them for feedback.
  • You can also record answers while practising for IELTS Speaking.

3. IELTS Reading

  • IELTS Academic Reading will require thorough practice as it involves long and complex texts. Students often fail to score Good Band Scores in IELTS Academic Reading.
  • Candidates should master skimming and scanning techniques to ace the reading test.
  • Learn new words every day and improve your vocabulary as this will help you during your test.

4. IELTS Listening

  • Make sure to read the instructions and questions carefully.
  • Remember that you will hear the audio once. Hence, pay enough attention when the audio is played.
  • Look for keywords that will help you locate your answer, i.e., if dates and names are mentioned in the questions, and you can quickly look for them.
