Purpose of the CELPIP Exam

The Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program or CELPIP is conducted by Paragon Testing Enterprises which is a subsidiary of the University of British Columbia (UBC). The CELPIP exam has two versions – CELPIP General and CELPIP General LS.

The CELPIP General Test is used for permanent residency applications and professional designations. The test assesses a candidate’s ability to Read, write, listen, and speak. The CELPIP General Test lasts about three hours and can be completed in one sitting without the need for a separate speaking session.

The CELPIP General LS Test is approved for Canadian citizenship applications. The test can be taken only within Canadian boundaries. The CELPIP-General LS Test evaluates a person’s functional listening and speaking skills. The LS test is taken by those that need to demonstrate their listening and speaking skills in order to obtain citizenship in Canada. The CELPIP General LS Test lasts for one hour and ten minutes.

Participants can use the CELPIP Test to demonstrate their English skills. The test measures a person’s ability to communicate in English in a variety of scenarios, including communicating with coworkers and supervisors at work, conversing with peers, interpreting telecasts, and understanding and responding to written information.
